What to do in the Bollenstreek
During your visit to the Bulb Region, you won’t be bored for a moment, there is so much to do! Amusement parks, museums, zoos, nature parks, water parks, cinemas and so on. But what makes this Bollenstreek so special?
Beaches & dunes The kilometers long coastal strip near the Bollenstreek is also called one of the most beautiful natural areas of the Netherlands. Relax with the healthy sea air and enjoy the hilly dunes, what is the Netherlands anyway special? Finish your visit to the beach or the dunes with a beautiful walking or cycling tour and make sure you have your own discovery.
Flower fields The most important part of the Bulb Region are of course the flower fields, this is also the best known symbol of the region. For more than 400 years, the flower fields have been a magnet for tourists from all over the world. So why the flower fields in the Netherlands? Our dunes turned out to have exactly the right ingredients to grow the best quality flower bulbs. This resulted in its enormous growth to become the center of the global flower bulb trade. Especially popular are the world-famous Keukenhof Flower Park and the annual Bloemencorso Bollenstreek flower parade. The Keukenhof Flower Park, located in Lisse, is the largest tulip garden in the world. This park is home to over 7 million bulbs that are planted every season. The park welcomes more than one million visitors during the opened weeks: this is only 7 to 8 per year. During a visit to the Keukenhof, you can see unique flower shows, discover magnificent ponds and approach various pavilions with restaurants and terraces. Besides Keukenhof Floral Park, every year you can enjoy the Flower Parade, the highlight of spring in the Netherlands. The Bloemencorso is a colorful parade with various corsowagens that can be admired in the city center of Haarlem. This corso is built with bulbous flowers such as hyacinths, tulips and daffodils.
Polders & lakes Right next to the Bollensteek is the largest polder and lake area in the Netherlands, also called the Green Heart of the Netherlands. Real nature and culture lovers will be amazed. The polders are often full of windmills and there are many small-scale farms to behold. The more active can enjoy themselves on the water with various water sports. For the explorer a tip to go sailing, there is much of the Netherlands to discover from the water.
Historical cities The Bollenstreek and its region have a large number of historical cities: Haarlem, Amsterdam, Leiden, The Hague, Delft, Rotterdam, Gouda and Utrecht. Each city has its own character and charm, which makes it fun to discover.
Hiking, biking & sailing The Bollenstreek is a popular hiking region with an extensive hiking network. These various hiking routes bring you to unique locations and provide a wonderful experience. In addition, the diverse landscape of the Bollenstreek also forms a fantastic environment for cyclists. Using an extensive cycling network, you can easily ride a route. Finally, sailing is a must! In the vicinity of the Bollenstreek, you’ll find the largest sailing area in the Netherlands: The Hollandse Plassengebied. With your own sloop, rental boat or canal tour, it’s great to be on the water.
